FDA Law Now Requires Quick Mammogram Results
An amendment to the Mammography Quality Standards Act requires that all women who have mammograms be notified in writing of the results within 30 days. Women whose mammograms suggest cancer will be notified within 5 days.
The new regulation requires that mammography centers not only report the results to the woman’s physician, but also provide her with a separate report – written in lay language. Women who have not been referred to the center by a doctor will receive both the lay and medical reports. Under earlier provisions which are now in effect, all mammography facilities in the U.S. must meet equipment, image quality, and operator training standards. Home Hepatitis C Test Now Available...HIV-1Home Test Kit
Also Available A home kit to test for antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) is now available. The manufacturer, Home Access Health, also has an HIV-1 Test Kit (39.95 for 10-day service, $49.95 for 3-day service). Hepatitis C, which is spread primarily through contact with infected blood, affects approximately 4 million Americans. (See Hepatitis C article.) Many people have infections that go undetected for several years. Hepatitis C can cause cirrhosis, liver cancer, or liver failure and is the major cause of liver transplantation in the United States. It is responsible for 8,000–10,000 deaths annually. The death toll is expected to triple in the next 10–20 years, eclipsing that of AIDS. Breaking a decade of silence, the CDC recently launched a Hepatitis C public information campaign. People at high risk for HCV infection are those who received blood transfusions before 1992, when the blood supply was not screened for the virus; users of injected illegal drugs; those who engage in high-risk sexual practices; and healthcare workers coming in contact with infected blood.
The Hepatitis C Check, which was approved by the FDA in April, contains instructions, a lancet, and filter paper for blood collection. The user pricks a finger, squeezes a drop of blood on the paper, and sends it to a laboratory where it is analyzed for HCV antibodies using FDA-approved tests. When tested on 1,200 people, the results were similar to those of tests performed by healthcare professionals. The Hepatitis C test kit sells for $69.95.
