Unfortunately, in today’s world, cognitive decline or cognitive impairment is not just reserved for old age. There is a worldwide epidemic of children on the autism spectrum with developmental and learning disabilities and suffering from many types of cognitive impairment. Every day people of all ages are affected by neurodegenerative diseases and autoimmune disorders, experiencing neurological dysfunctioning and possible dementia. Frightening as it may be, “Prozac” has become a household word as this generation plunges to the depths of depression. It is not uncommon to hear women approaching menopause complain of memory loss and high anxiety. Ultimately, every one of us will be faced with the gifts of aging that creep up on us when least expected and never at the right moment. Whatever the circumstances, we could all use a “mental tune-up”. There are natural substances that may enhance mental ability and these cognitive enhancers, as they are called, may improve memory, learning, attention, concentration, problem solving, reasoning, social skills, decision making and planning. What we can expect from these cognitive enhancers is an increase in brain metabolism, cerebral circulation and protection from physical and chemical damage to the brain. Cognitive Therapy Transdermal Cream is a combination of powerful brain nutrients that will impact different areas of neurological functioning. The unique liposome delivery system allows the nutrients to enter the bloodstream directly; bypassing degradation by the liver. The key ingredients in the Cognitive Therapy Transdermal Cream, are all natural pure ingredients: Evening Primrose Oil or Vitamin F, is an essential fatty acid (EFA) rich in gamma-linoleic and gamma-linoleic acid. Found in high concentrations in the healthy brain, EFAs are necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses needed for neurological connections. Without adequate EFAs, cognitive functioning of the brain would be impaired and memory recall would decline. Phospholipids To define and understand what phospholipids are, we need to first define exactly what lipids are. In the scientific world lipids are simply fatty acids, which also include their derivatives, plus all the substances related to them. For example, there are simple lipids such as tocopherols, an important antioxidant associated with Vitamin E; and there are complexed lipids, commonly known as phospholipids – a phosphorus-containing lipid. Phosphatidylcholine (PC), the most abundant phospholipid in plants and animals is a nutrient that supplys choline, needed for cell-membrane integrity. PC acts as a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, needed for memory and learning. PC is also a component of lecithin, a lipid needed by every living cell in the human body. The cell membranes which regulate the nutrient absorption in our cells are composed of lecithin, as are the protective sheaths surrounding our brain (myelin sheath), our muscles and our nerve cells. Lecithin is an important emulsifier in the body capable of removing bad fats, such as plaque, from vital organs and arteries. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is found in every cell type in the body but is particularly concentrated in the inner layer of the nerve cell membranes and far more abundant in the brain than any other organ. PS optimizes a variety of functions of the single nerve cell, protects cell membranes, and is responsible for nerve growth regulation. Clinical findings from extensive research indicate that cognitive improvement might be the result of improved health of individual nerve cells. PS is and has been the most studied nutrient for cognitive decline. Many clinical studies for cognition have verified the clinical significance of PS as a brain nutrient providing metabolic support for memory, learning, concentration and behavior. One particular clinical finding of people ages 52 to 64 resulted in a 12-year recovery of cognitive functioning! PS has also proven to have the potential to improve the quality of life for the elderly. Heavy metals and free radicals, contributed by smoking, drinking, environmental pollutants, chronic emotional stress, nutrient deficiencies, etc. can cumulatively damage cell membranes triggering cognitive impairment on some level. PS has been found to slow the degeneration process and actually rejuvenate cognitive functioning. As one expert, Dr. Paris Kidd explains so succinctly, “PS makes membranes, membranes make cells, the 100 billion cells organize into networks, and these are the circuitry of the working brain.” Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) is a carnitine derivative naturally produced in the brain, liver and kidneys by the amino acid L-Carnitine. ALC enhances the production of acetylcholine, the chemical (neurotransmitter) that transmits signals across nerve cells and is responsible for learning and memory. ALC is needed for proper transmission of nerve impulses from the brain to the central nervous system. It is also known as a neuro-protective agent against aging because of its ability to protect against oxidative stress. Also important is ALC’s ability to transport the long-chain essential fatty acids to the mitochondria (the source for RNA/DNA) where they are converted into Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides energy to cells in the body, but in particular, it provides neuronal ATP (energy) to protect the neurons in the brain. ALC has been found to improve long and short-term memory, language deficits, attention and concentration skills and spatial abilities (motor skills). L- Carnosine is a dipeptide (the amino acids Alanine and Histidine) that naturally occurs in the muscles and brain. Laboratory studies have shown that L-Carnosine has the ability to increase the longevity of certain cells, protect neurons in the brain against oxidative stress, minimize excitotoxicity (conversion to MSG in the brain), prevent damage to cellular DNA and protect against the toxicity from zinc and copper (found to increase senile plaque formation). Other research indicates that L-Carnosine stimulates the front lobal areas of the brain increasing activity, which may stimulate emotional responses, decrease epileptic activity, and increase cognitive functioning, expressive speech and abstract thinking. L-Carnosine can also rejuvenate cells against skin aging and cataracts. The main dietary source for L-Carnosine is meat, so supplementation is a must for vegetarians and those choosing to reduce meat consumption. The Extracts Bacopa Monniera (Brahmi) is a botanical that comes from the great Ayurvedic Eastern tradition that can be traced back 5000 years to the Himalayan Mountains of India. It is well known for its soothing effect on the central nervous system making it an excellent anti-anxiety and anti-stress herb. It has also been revered in the Ayurvedic herbal tradition as enhancing and supporting cognitive and memory functioning. It is interesting to note that Bacopa can be an excellent remedy for stress and anxiety due to memory loss or memory lapses. Scientists also believe that Bacopa can help to restore and maintain memory. Studies with Bacopa have demonstrated improved speed at processing visual information, improved learning rate, and improved speed in memory consolidation (taking short-term memory information and making it long-term). It is also a powerful antioxidant, protecting the critical memory centers in the brain and reducing the effects of stress on the brain. The hippocampus is the area in the brain where memory is found and, bacosides, the specific ingredients found in Bacopa, protect the nerve impulses, which are transmitted across the synapses in the brain. The synapses are the links where the electromagnetic activity between neurons takes place in the brain. Bacosides protect the synaptic function of the nerves in the hippocampus. Nerve impulses are transmitted across the synapses and degeneration of the nerve impulses is believed to lead to impaired memory and cognition. Gingko Biloba (GBE) is one of the oldest living tree species, dating back 150 to 200 million years. Found in China, it was brought to Europe in the 1700’s and today is commonly prescribed in Germany and France. Over the last 30 years there have been more than 300 clinical studies done on the many beneficial effects of GBE. Most notable are the positive effects of this herb on the vascular system linked to recognizable improvement in brain functioning, in particular the cerebellum. The cerebellum is the area of the brain that plays a role in the area of sensory perception and motor output. Gingko has been found to increase vasodilatation –dilation of blood vessels – and peripheral blood flow rate transporting more oxygen to the brain. Quality circulation in the brain modulates cerebral energy metabolism by improving short and long-term memory, cognitive functioning, focus and concentration, social behavior and depression. Gingko also has a protective effect on the blood-brain barrier, the barrier that protects the brain from harmful substances in the blood stream. Gingko leaves contain two gingkolides, flavonoids and terpenoids, which have potent antioxidant properties. They protect the nerves, heart muscle and retina from damage as well as improve blood flow by reducing the stickiness of platelets. Most researchers agree that Gingko Biloba will effectively improve cognitive performance and social functioning at any age, and most likely will stabilize or slow down the worsening effects of severe dementia. Gotu Kola is another popular botanical from the ancient Hindu tradition of Ayruvedic medicine that has been touted for its ability to heighten mental acuity and balance both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The active ingredient triterpenes help keep blood vessels strong and assists in producing essential neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers in the brain. Gotu Kola has been known to improve memory, enhance learning capabilities and possibly restore memory loss. One Indian study showed the remarkable ability of Gotu Kola to steadily increase blood sugar levels – possibly accounting for the cognitive and memory enhancements. It has been well documented that there is a relationship between hypoglycemia or low blood sugar and mood swings, memory loss, depression, brain fog and neurological disorders. A clinical study of 30 children with learning disabilities given Gotu Kola for 12 weeks reported significant improvement in their attention spans and concentration skills. Gotu Kola is also very high in the B-vitamin complex group: B-1 thiamine, B-2 riboflavin and B6 pyridoxine. The B-vitamins are extremely important for normal functioning of the nervous system, and a healthy nervous system will promote better and more organized brain functioning. Gotu Kola also appears to have calming properties, useful for high anxiety and an overactive nervous system. Smart Nutrition Idebenone is a variant of Coenzyme Q10 with all its benefits, plus many more, including cognition enhancement. There have been a number of studies with Idebenone using brain cells on animals and humans showing enhanced brain structure and function. Idebenone has the ability to increase serotonin production, a neurotransmitter that regulates sleep, appetite and mood. In the case of shock, heart attack, stroke or poor circulation, Idebenone will suppress free radicals that damage delicate tissue caused by stressful events. Idebenone will also protect body organs with its superior antioxidant properties. Whenever hypoxia or lack of oxygen occurs, Idebenone will continue to produce ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate – the major source of cellular energy) to counteract the situation. Idebenone also increases brain levels of nerve growth factor, a protein that promotes nerve cell growth. It also protects both the myelin sheath, which is the fatty layer that protects the nervous system, and the mitochondria, where nutrients are converted into energy. Idebenone is also well known for its neuronal protection against excitatory amino acid neurotoxicity from dietary foods such as MSG, aspartame, soy, gluten and casein, flavor enhancers etc. Eating foods with glutamate or aspartate can cause excitotoxicity, (cell/neuron death in the brain), and Idebenone will protect against this process. Double blind studies in Germany with dementia patients have shown an increase in cognitive functioning and slowing of the disease progression. Vinpocetin , an alkaloid extracted from the periwinkle plant is used in about 35 countries to treat stroke and vascular dementia. A cerebral vasodilator, it improves circulation to the brain by dilating blood vessels which in turn enhances blood flow. Vinpocetin not only has the amazing capability of selectively increasing the blood flow to the brain, but it can also lower the blood flow to other parts of the body. A powerful antioxidant, it reduces free radical damage by improving the oxygen utilization in the brain. Because of Vinpocetin’s ability to uptake glucose and oxygen to the brain, it improves cerebral metabolism and increases neuronal Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) – even in conditions of low oxygen. Another very important quality of Vinpocetin is the ability to reduce blood clotting by making blood cells more malleable and inhibiting the formation of platelet aggregation (blood cells clump together when there is lack of oxygen). Research studies have shown Vinpocetin to improve over all brain function and cognitive ability because it can restore impaired brain carbohydrate/energy metabolism. Vinpocetin can increase memory, alertness, concentration, learning speed/ability, neuro-muscular coordination and reaction time. Galantamine , an extract from the flowering snowflake plant (similar to a daffodil) increases levels of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for memory and learning, by forming a pathway with the neurons that produce acetylcholine. Cognitive functioning is controlled by the central nervous system, which in turn is controlled by the cholinergic system, a pathway or system of cells that produce and/or are stimulated by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. If this pathway is disrupted, acetylcholine levels drop, triggering symptoms of memory loss, confusion, short attention span, etc. Galantamine has a dual-fold action of boosting cholinergic function: it inhibits an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which increases acetylcholine in the brain; and it modulates the brain nicotinic receptors, which increase the response to acetylcholine affecting learning, memory and attention. Normal aging has been found to diminish cholinergic functioning, particularly in cases of dementia. Studies indicate Galantamine can delay the onset of aging and cognitive decline. In neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, amyloid plaque deposits are the key issue that can trigger a decline in acetylcholine levels. Dementia in Parkinson’s also improved with Galantamine, according to American and Norwegian researchers. Numerous studies have demonstrated that Galantamine can produce significant improvement in cognitive functioning, daily living activities and assist in relieving behavioral symptoms. Huperzine A is an alkaloid found in the Chinese club moss, Huperzia serrata. It has antioxidant and neuroprotective properties reducing the possibility of neuronal cell death by glutamate. It also blocks acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine strengthens and stimulates the transfer of nerve impulses from one nerve cell to another to ensure cognitive acuity. By keeping acetylcholine levels healthy, Huperzine A protects and supports the nervous system’s role in transmitting cell-to-cell communication, allowing for better cognitive and memory functioning. Studies by Chinese researchers have shown Huperzine A to improve memory, thinking and behavioral function in people with dementia or neurodegenerative diseases. Interestingly, these researchers also found that school age children with memory and learning difficulties given Huperzine A scored significantly better than the control group on standard memory and comprehension tests as well as Chinese and English lessons. Persons suffering from dementia and children with memory/learning difficulties can significantly improve from this beneficial brain nutrient. Cognitive Therapy Transdermal Cream is appropriate for both adults and children with neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disorders, autism spectrum disorders, or anyone suffering from modern day stress and anxiety. This cream can be applied directly to the temples, in small quantities several times a day as needed, but preferably not prior to bedtime. |
