CoQ10 Cream
CoQ10 Topical Cream Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10; also called ubiquinone or ubiquinol) is an organic molecule structurally related to vitamins E and K. It is present in abundance in the membranes of the mitochondrion, the “powerhouse” of the cell, as well as in the membranes of other organelles (compartments within each cell), such as the endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes and peroxisomes. CoQ10 helps in the transfer of electrons as part of the cytochrome system for generating cellular energy. Its ability to donate and accept electrons is what gives CoQ10 its antioxidant properties. As an antioxidant, CoQ10 can help protect cells and tissues from oxidative damage caused by chemical free radicals. Accordingly, CoQ10 has diverse health and medical benefits, including promoting cardiovascular health, preventing as well as treating cancer, maintaining a healthy immune system, treating various metabolic disorders, alleviating various neurological conditions and protecting against neurodegeneration. Although young persons can produce adequate amounts of CoQ10, the body’s ability to make this factor diminishes with increasing age (around ages 35-40). This drop in CoQ10 production can be exacerbated by such factors as stress and bad eating habits. As a person gets older, CoQ10 supplementation becomes increasingly important. Supplementation with antioxidants such as CoQ10 may also be very important in treating conditions such as autism, in which young patients may have increased sensitivity to, or decreased protection from, damage caused by chemical free radicals or UV radiation (oxidative stress). As Dr. Woody R. McGinnis has observed in the literature and on the Internet, the use of antioxidants in these patients may markedly improve autistic behavior. (The role of oxidative stress in autism, and the use of antioxidants in its treatment, was the subject of a review by Dr. McGinnis in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, volume 10, pages 22-36, 2004). A particularly noteworthy aspect of CoQ10 is that it can be successfully applied in topical form, yielding high levels of CoQ10 in the skin. This was first observed by a group of researchers at the University of Pisa (Italy) School of Medicine, who noted that the levels in the skin were directly related to both the concentration of the topical CoQ10 preparation and the amount of contact time on the skin surface. Subsequently, there are a number of studies reported in the scientific literature that have employed CoQ10 in topical form. These include protecting aging skin against oxidative damage by UV in sunlight as well as from chemical free radicals; skin wrinkle reduction (notably, reduction of wrinkles around the eyes, or “crows feet”, was reported after long-term topical CoQ10 use); preventing apoptosis (programmed cell death) of corneal cells exposed to laser irradiation during eye surgery; and the use of a topical preparation for treatment of adult periodontitis. CoQ10 supplementation has been reported to benefit various central nervous system conditions. Some migraine headache sufferers have reported that CoQ10 is useful in relieving headache pain. It is believed that CoQ10 can help protect brain tissue and alleviate suffering from neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. CoQ10 may also protect against cerebrovascular damage resulting from transient ischemia (stroke). CoQ10 makes important contributions to cardiovascular health. It is present in abundance in heart muscle cells, probably because of the heart’s high cellular energy requirements. There is evidence that CoQ10 deficiency can be correlated with the degree of severity of congestive heart failure. Conversely, both the safety and efficacy of the use of CoQ10 for cardiomyopathy and heart failure indications have been well established through clinical trials. It may be especially important for persons taking one or more widely used cardiovascular medications, to supplement their diet with CoQ10. This is because in the body, the synthesis of mevalonate, a CoQ10 precursor molecule, is inhibited by the cholesterol-lowering statin drugs such as Lipitor, by beta-blockers, and by blood pressure lowering agents. In fact, in persons taking statin drugs, reductions in serum concentrations of CoQ10 of as much as 40 percent have been reported in the literature. A role for CoQ10 that straddles both the cardiovascular and cancer therapeutic areas is prevention of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (cardiomyopathy). Important cancer chemotherapeutic agents such as doxorubicin (Adriamycin) damage heart cells, owing to the presence of an enzyme found in abundance mainly in the cardiac cell mitochondrial membranes. Major oxidative stress resulting from enzymatic reduction of these anthracyclines leads to irreversible mitochondrial damage and eventually to cardiac cell death (apoptosis or necrosis). The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 can prevent such damage to cardiac cells by protecting the mitochondria of those cells. In addition to protecting against drug-induced cardiomyopathy during cancer treatment, CoQ10 may have a major role as a cancer preventative. CoQ10 serves as a cancer preventative by conferring protection against cellular damage caused by free radicals. Finally, CoQ10 also can function as an immune system enhancer. Immune-boosting effects on both the humoral immune system, such as increased levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG), and the cell-mediated immune system, such as enhanced macrophage activity, have been reported in studies of CoQ10 in both cancer and AIDS patients.
